Romania and my “Summer Vacation”

Well I’ve been traveling for the last two weeks.  I’ve been tired, but things have been great.  The last thing I left you all with was that I was leaving for Romania.  Well I left at 7am to go to the bus station in Ruse to Romania, while traveling there I realized I forgot something very important, my passport.  So I had to get on another bust and go home to get my passport.  I ended up on the 4:30 bus to Bucharest, and I was off.  I arrived in the center of Bucharest and went to the train station and headed to Brasov.  The train to Brasov was really nice.  The thing to know about trains in Romania is that you have an assigned compartment and an assigned seat.  Was asked to move and then shown this fact.  I arrived in Brasov at about 11:15pm and thought, I’ll just take a taxi to my hostel, because it’s dark and I didn’t know how to get to Happy Hostel.  Well, the taxi man took me to the wrong hostel, and overcharged me.  Luckily the hostel owner of this other hostel called a friend who charged me a normal price and took me to the correct hostel.  When I arrived there, Ira wasn’t there.  He had gotten worried and walked to the train station to meet me.  So I just relaxed by his computer til he arrived back.  I have never had the urge to hug someone as much as I did right then.  I ate a little food, and then we went to bed.  The next day Ira, some girl from Finland, and I went walking around Brasov.  We saw the Black Church, this large sign that looks like the Hollywood Sign, that in communist times said Stalin, and many other pretty things.  We climbed up a big hill behind the Brasov sign, and took a ride up to the top of this panoramic hill.  It was all beautiful, and I have a sunburn from it.  The next day was Dracula‘s castle in Bran.  This castle is known as Castle Bran.  It’s not really what you expect.  This Romanian Queen lived there last and most of the furniture and photos are of her.  The real Dracula lived in a different castle, Bram Stoker just liked this castle better.  The castle is beautiful.  Many pieces of beautiful and wonderful furniture.  They also sell Dracula wine and Dracula vodka, nice and expensive.  There are a lot of touristy shops, but not too many that you are bothered by them.  My last full day in Romania was for relaxing.  I haven’t really vacationed on my vacation so Ira and I just took a slow walk.  Just enjoyed each other’s company. It was nice.  I left at 5am by train to Bucharest.  I walked around Bucharest for a while, and got lost.  Bucharest didn’t excite me the same way that Brasov did.  I don’t know how to explain it.  Brasov felt so beautiful and alive.  I took the train back to Bulgaria and was home around 5pm.

The last few days have been about renewing my Litchna Karta and my visa.  It’s a process that has to be done at least 14 days before your card’s expiration day and because of my vacation I only had two.  So I was a bit stressed about that.  I have been relaxing the past weekend and having coffee with people.  I have begun teaching my summer classes and I have camp glow to look forward to.
