Who remembers the fist day of school? I’m not talking about kindergarten, let’s go with 10th grade. What happened? Well depending on the high school I was in I either just showed up at school and prayed I remembered my locker combination from the year before, or I went to the cafeteria, received my new locker combination and my schedule and then when to class. That’s all, no party, no celebration, no pomp or circumstance. But here in Bulgaria, it’s different. September 15th, the first day of school is a holiday, and there is a performance and speeches and other things that all holidays need, including a play. I have been helping my school prepare for it’s September 15th celebration and my Director found it strange that in America, at least in my experience, we don’t celebrate the first day of school. It is treated at just day one, of all those days we must be in the building. Today there will be many meetings and tomorrow will be the first day of school and I am kind of excited to see what will happen this year. It being my last school year I’ll be working in the Peace Corps.

We sort of celebrate the first day, in that no one ever actually makes you do anything and it’s all just kind of “Oh yes, well, here we are then.” Kind of anti-climactic, stresswise.
